Cybersecurity Executive Arrested in Extortion Case Reportedly Linked to ShinyHunters
A Canadian cybersecurity executive who worked with companies facing ransomware demands has been arrested in an extortion case reportedly connected to ShinyHunters.
According to BleepingComputer, Edward Dubrovsky, 54, was arrested in Pennsylvania while attending a cybersecurity conference. He previously co-founded CYPFER and has been associated with CyberSteward, which helps businesses respond to cyber extortion and negotiate ransom payments.
Court records list conspiracy and extortion-related charges. However, the criminal complaint remains sealed, so the specific accusations have not been made public.
Several reports have linked his arrest to the ShinyHunters investigation, but the FBI has not publicly identified Dubrovsky as the suspected co-conspirator mentioned in its announcement. His possible connection to the recent breach of the FBI’s jobs portal also remains unclear.
ShinyHunters is known for stealing company data and demanding payment to keep it from being released. The arrest raises questions because Dubrovsky’s professional work involved helping victims handle those same types of threats.
For now, the charges are allegations. More details will be needed to understand his alleged involvement.
