If you’re still using an older version of Windows, Microsoft has announced a change you should pay attention to. Some devices could lose access to Windows Update in 2027 unless they receive the required updates or move to a supported version of Windows.

The change involves digital certificates that help Windows establish a trusted connection to Microsoft’s update service. These certificates expire on **May 17, 2027, and June 19, 2027**. Computers without the replacements will no longer be able to connect to Windows Update after their applicable deadline.

For most people running a supported version of Windows and keeping up with monthly updates, the replacement certificates should already be handled. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 25H2 and newer require no additional action for this change. Older supported releases need the appropriate updates installed before the certificates expire.

The bigger concern is computers running unsupported Windows versions. Microsoft recommends upgrading those systems before the deadline. Businesses should also check their older computers and servers now so they have time to plan. Devices receiving updates through Windows Server Update Services, or WSUS, are excluded from this certificate change.

My take is that a computer still working fine can make it easy to put off an upgrade. But being able to turn it on and use your programs doesn’t tell you whether it can still receive security fixes. This is a good reminder to check your Windows version and update status before it becomes a problem.
